Narrative Writing

Narrative writing is technique of writing that we use to make most stories. The product of narrative writing is narrative story, a story that is very usual and long-lasting and have no special elements or special specification. Narrative story has some elements that are identical with other story, not alike mystery stories that has a lot of important and different elements. Narrative story can be a fact (true story) or a fiction (alike folk tales).
Narrative writing produces narrative story, such as:
  • Folk tales
  • Legends
  • Fairy Tales
  • Chain (continuing) stories
Elements of narrative story (narrative writing) are:
  1. Characters
Character is all of the human, animals, and plants that have a role or do something in a story. Take Cinderella as an example. In that story, Cinderella, his stepmother, the dwarfs, and the prince play his own role. Cinderella as the poor girl, his stepmother as a despicable and cruel woman who press Cinderella, and the dwarfs as a joy and wealth giver and the prince as the dancing partner for Cinderella. All of them can be classified or called as the characters in that story.

    2. Setting

Setting is where and when the story take place and time. Setting helps the reader to imagine the real situation of a story, to make the it looks happen in a real world near us. A setting will become very real and imaginable if we add audio visual aids, such as sounds, pictures, and videos. Cinderella has a setting in a castle and her house. With them, we can imagine us as one character or player in Cinderella, and we can really understand and enjoy the story.

  3. Plot

Plot is steps that containing important events in a story. Plot of the story will be very clear if we draw it in a shape of graph-like diagram. This diagram will include introduction, conflicts, climax, and closing or resolution. Introduction is a start of the story. It usually introduces characters and settings of the story. An event could be called as a conflict if it has a big effect to the story and make another big events. Climax is where the story reaches its peak. If in a folk tale, the climax is where we got the lesson, or the success of the characters. Resolution or closing is the end of the story, which explains the character's life after his/her success.

  4. Dialogs

Dialogs is the element that differentiates narrative story or writing with descriptive story or writing. Dialogs are the real and direct words or sentences that the characters said along the story. This will make the story "live" and happen really. Dialogs make the reader "hear" what the character said. Dialogs written by using quotation marks, such as "(dialogs)", (character) said.
Example: "Wash my clothes quickly!!!", her stepmother said.

Metaphors Inside A Song

As what I said before, we can find metaphors in songs. Here is one example of metaphor inside a song
Title: As The Deer
Song Writer: Martin Nystrom

Lyrics:
As The Deer

Verse 1
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after Thee
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship Thee

Chorus:
You alone are my strength my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship Thee

Verse 2
You're my friend
And You are my brother
Even though You are a King
I love You more than any other
So much more than anything

Chorus

Verse 3
I want You more than gold or silver
Only You can satisfy
You alone are the real joygiver
And the apple of my eye

Metaphors and similes inside this song:
  •  As the deer panteth for the water
Means: The song writer really miss someone (in this case his Lord) as a deer miss river or water
  • You alone are my strength and my shield
Means: The writer feels that his Lord is a strength and my shield, without his Lord he can't do anything.
  • You're my friend and You are my brother
Means: The writer feels that he had a very close relationship with his Lord, alike two friends and two brothers.
  • And the apple of my eye
Means: The writer felt that his Lord provided joy, happiness, and fun, as an apple for our eyes.
